7 Tips for Creating Fresh Hydrangea Bouquets

Hydrangeas are low growing shrubs of luxuriant foliage and beautiful domed or flattened flowers. If you grow your own hydrangeas, chances are your favorite time is when you can cut the flowers from the shrubs and create fresh bouquets for your home.

Fresh hydrangeas are less likely to wilt if they are properly cut. Follow these quick tips to create a beautiful, fresh hydrangea bouquet.

1. Wait two to three weeks after the shrub begins to bloom to cut the stems. The flowers should feel like stiff paper and resist crumpling when gently squeezed.

2. Cut stems during the morning of the day before you want to create a bouquet.

3. After cutting the stems, immediately place them in a bucket or vase of fresh water.

4. Once indoors, cut the hydrangea stems at a sharp angle. This creates a large surface for the stem to absorb water.

5. Submerge the flower heads in water for two to three hours.

6. Remove the flower heads from the water. Add floral preservative and cut the stems again at an angle.

7. Store the cut hydrangeas overnight in a cool, dry location.

The next morning, your hydrangeas are ready to be arranged into a beautiful bouquet!
